Why Would You Leave? Riding in Wellington

In Wellington, we’re spoilt for choice. From Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park to Mount Victoria, the Belmont trails to Red Rocks, Wainui trails or super long missions out to Featherston and coastal loops....it’s all right here.

Road. MTB. Gravel. Why would you leave?

And it’s not just the riding - it’s the racing too. From Wellington’s PNP Spring Series, the Crazyman, Karapoti and Porirua Grand Traverse to the XTERRA Wellington Festival, the Faultline Ultra and of course the Wellington Mountain Bike Club Enduro Series, there’s always something on.

You don’t need to travel to find a challenge, it’s right here on our doorstep. Or what better reason to come to Wellington!

My Favourite Wellington Trails?

People often ask what my favourite trail is. It’s not always a specific trail. It’s the long ride home after work a solid two hours before dinner and mental reset after a long day and coming home even better than before I left. Up Hawkins Hill, across to Makara and home.  And even better in the middle of winter when there is no one on the tracks except me.

The Weekend Long Ride

Weekends depend on my training block. As I get older, I’ve learned something important: Zwift is my friend. A solid 2–3 hour ride on Zwift can save my health on a wild Wellington day. It means I can still show up strong when it counts instead of empty from fighting the elements. And of course if the weather is playing ball nothing is better than a long one. I've got the kit from head to toe and I'm toasty and there's nothing like that feeling of being fully alive on the bike. My mega ride always starts from home, heads up and over the Remutaka Incline, wraps around the coast, and rolls all the way back again. A full 165km marathon effort and on a perfect Wellington day, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

The Quick Spin

If I’m short on time, I’ll roll from Crofton Downs to Makara over the Skyline and back home again. Or a few quick laps at Makara just enough to feel the legs wake up. That’s the beauty of Wellington, you don’t need a big plan you can just ride out the door and see where it takes you.

What’s On the Cards This Year?

Family time has meant racing has taken a small step back lately and that’s okay. But Sophia and I both have our eyes on April for the 50km and 100km at the Faultline Ultra. My 3rd 100k and her first 50k. Big goals and plenty of time to train, testing our gear and being the guinea pigs so you don’t have to. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Drop us a line if you need help choosing your gear,  we’re always happy to help you find the right fit. info@silversky.co.nz
